A little about your new companion:
Lemon Balm is known as the happy plant. Bringing a light emotional uplift, it is perfect for as the seasons are changing and long winter grey’s. It is also anti- bacterial and anti-viral, helping to fend off cold and flues. It’s smell is a gift upon itself and to fill the air with it’s aroma can unknowingly uplift your spirit.
It grows up in bush like ways making it easy for indoor growth or small gardens or deserted city spaces………..
Instructions :
INdoors
Put seeds in soil in a pot. They are small seeds so they should not be put deep in the soil but be close to the surface with a light amount of soil on top of them. Don’t pack it down. Water lightly, often so that the soil stays moist but not too saturated. Once the baby seedlings have start to sprout place them in a location with some sunlight. If you have a porch you can bring them to live outside and then bring them in for the winter.
As it grows bigger get a larger pot for it to be able to gain more nutrients and for its roots have more space. It will grow more each year, as long as it has a big enough pot for the roots to be growing out too. Plant many seeds and see how many plants come up. You can have one plant per pot and give the “extras” to friends.
outdoors
Lemon balm thrives in the climate of this region so you can plant it in a garden earth space or an abandoned crevices of the city. It likes to grow in full sun or part sun / part shade. You can start the seeds inside till they sprout and then plant the little ones outside in early spring, if you want. It will spread! So you will have to be aware of its growth if you put it in your garden. You can plant the seeds directly in the earth but you may have less of the seeds sprout with this method.
How to Grow
Visit with your plants. more love is more love.
how to gather
They will grow larger each year. Gather leaves at your leisure. or when they are full of leaves you can clip them 3” from the base. They will then begin to grow again. This means you can do many harvests. You will want to cut them before they go to seed. Through time you will get to know your plant more and its life cycles. It will come back each year and get bigger and more bountiful with what it shares with you.
How to Prepare
Make tea or dry the leaves for later…. cook into a lasagna or other foods.
How to make tea and dry the leaves….. To make tea you can simmer in water with the lid covering, not boils, but simmer for 12 minute OR you can boil water then turn off the heat, add lemon balm and fold into the water. Cover it with a lid and let it sit over night. Strain the pot and drink… and put what you don’t drink in the fridge for later. to dry the leaves, remove them from the stems and place in a paper bag, closing the top by rolling it over. Put this in a sunny window until they are dry.
